Case Study Sections (rich text block):
- The Problem - Prolonged spaceflight causes bone density loss, muscle deterioration, sleep disruption, and psychological strain. Current exercise regimens are time-consuming and limited. The challenge: How might we support astronaut wellbeing on long-duration missions?
- Research - Interviews with astronauts Victor Glover Jr. and Shannon Walker, contextual inquiry during simulations, empathy mapping, pain point analysis. Key insights: need for connection to Earth, improved physical regimens, stronger mental health support, more immersive environments.
- The Solution - Developed Sano, a system of three robotic companions:
• Hearty -physical health coach with body scanning + guided workouts
• Joy -mental wellness robot with light therapy, meditation, sound baths
• Mix - immersive projection system transforming small ISS quarters into nature-inspired environments - UI & Brand - Central tablet interface connecting all three robots, with modules for vitals, workouts, wellness, and environment. Visual identity: Sano (“to heal” in Latin), circle motif for wholeness, eye motif for awareness and monitoring.
- Outcome - Sano demonstrates how design can integrate technology, health, and emotional support in extreme environments. Recognized by NASA representatives and awarded Silver Award at the 2021 Spring Show.
